Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing: The Spirituality of the Law, Part 6

“Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”—Matthew 5:28.

The Jews prided themselves on their morality and looked with horror upon the sensual practices of the heathen. The presence of the Roman officers whom the imperial rule had brought into Palestine was a continual offense to the people, for with these foreigners had come in a flood of heathen customs, lust, and dissipation. In Capernaum, Roman officials with their gay paramours haunted the parades and promenades, and often the sound of revelry broke upon the stillness of the lake as their pleasure boats glided over the quiet waters. The people expected to hear from Jesus a stern denunciation of this class, but what was their astonishment as they listened to words that laid bare the evil of their own hearts!MB 59.3

When the thought of evil is loved and cherished, however secretly, said Jesus, it shows that sin still reigns in the heart. The soul is still in the gall of bitterness and in the bond of iniquity. He who finds pleasure in dwelling upon scenes of impurity, who indulges the evil thought, the lustful look, may behold in the open sin, with its burden of shame and heart-breaking grief, the true nature of the evil which he has hidden in the chambers of the soul. The season of temptation, under which, it may be, one falls into grievous sin, does not create the evil that is revealed, but only develops or makes manifest that which was hidden and latent in the heart. As a man “thinketh in his heart, so is he;” for out of the heart “are the issues of life.” Proverbs 23:74:23. MB 60.1

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for Your Word, which reveals to us that which otherwise we would not know or understand. Thank You for Your love for us in giving to us Your Son in whom we have a Perfect Example and for teaching us the broad application of Your law of love. Please bless us to be like Jesus: to live, to love, to minister like Him. Please bless us to meditate on His perfect character that we shall desire to become wholly transformed and renewed in the image of His purity and have hearts where envy, evil surmising, and neither hatred nor lust can exist. Regardless of circumstances, Heavenly Father, please bless us to offer to You unswerving obedience to the inmost principles of Your holy moral law. Please bless us to trust You to so successfully guide us through the vicissitudes of life that even the toughest trials hard to bear will pull from the depths of our hearts peaceful gratitude and prove a blessing to ourselves and to those who witness our lives that they might see Jesus in us and too be drawn into a saving relationship with Him. Let us all glow with the brightness of divine presence in this world. Please bless us to be pure in heart and to live as in Your visible presence during the time You apportion us in this world. Thank You for we pray in the magnificent and matchless name of Your Son and our Savior, Jesus. Amen.

where devotionals are first posted daily (almost without fail). From there devotionals are publicly shared to my page on FB, LinkedIn, and Signal (in My Story), and to a response-restricted group of nearly 200 on WhatsApp.
NOTEThese devotionals began as daily texts to encourage my academy roommate and dear friend of nearly 50 years, until she suddenly passed March 2023. Now I continue to compile and send them to anyone who will receive them and to her family in honor of their mom.
Lately, I have begun featuring consecutive chapter portions of a select Bible-based book.
If you agree to continue receiving them, then this is my personal gift to you and in this way, I not only honor God but the memory of a very dear friend whom I desperately miss.
My personal prayer is that God will bless me to find ways to multiply this gift, so that we all may be encouraged to be found faithful in the sight of a Holy God, whenever Christ returns or our eyes are shut in the sleep of death.
It is a prayerful process that leads me to share from my personal study.
So please feel free to forward to your loved ones or to anyone, as God leads you. I’m calling them Barb’s Devotionals
